Hispania was divided circa the year 197 BC into two new provinces, Hispania Citerior and Hispania Ulterior. The capital of Hispania Citerior was Tarraco, modern Tarragona. The city of Tarragona is located on a rocky hill which gradually slopes down to the Mediterranean coast.

The Amphitheatre was built at the beginning of the 2nd century. Two types of spectacle were held here: gladiator fights and simulated hunts or fights with wild animals. It was also the place where prisoners condemned to death  were executed.

The Arch of Berá is located about 20km. northwest of Tarragona, near the town of Berá, along the the route followed by both the Via Augusta and the modern main Tarragona-Barcelona road. Constructed of large ashlars, it has a central section standing on a podium decorated with mock pillars with Corinthian capitals that frame the arch itself, and highlighted by decorative moulding on the archivolt and the imposts.

The Roman Aqueduct, built in the I century AD, can be found about 4 km west of Tarragona, on the road to Lleida. It is a fine example of Roman engineering it is a two-tiered stretch measuring 217mtrs long by 27m high.
